Parts of a Chicken Questions for Children
Sam Loyd mentions a young boy's sketch book and comes up with several riddles involving the different parts of a chicken. These riddles were written around 1915 so we doubt you have heard them. These are great for young children.
He starts out asking...
Why is a chicken like a farmer?
How can you tell that the chicken is large?
Why does the chicken remind you of the gas delivery man?
Think of parts of a chicken when answering the following riddles...
What parts of an army do you see?
What parts of a mountain do you see?
What part of a kite do you see?
What part of a will do you see?
What part of a needle do you see?
What part of a table do you see?
What should the chicken lay on the dressing table?
Show the source of a river.
Show something on the canal.

Railroad Bridge Math Puzzle
This math puzzle was taken from Sam Loyd's railroad puzzle starring Casey's Cow.
A young cow, exactly five feet long, was wandering around on a railroad bridge. She spotted a train coming toward her at 90 mph.
When she started running, the train was exactly twice the length of the bridge away from the end that it was approaching.
The cow wisely chose to run toward the train to get off the bridge and had 12 inches to spare before she would have met her demise.
Had she gone with a more human-like instinct and run away from the train toward the other end of the bridge, her rear quarters would have missed the end of the bridge by 3 inches as the train did her in.
Based on this information alone, can you tell how fast the cow was running and how long the bridge is?

Railroad Bridge Math Puzzle
The best way to solve this puzzle is to use what we know and work our way towards our final answer step by step.
1. If the cow runs toward the train, the train goes two bridge lengths minus 12 inches, while the cow goes half a bridge length minus five feet.
2. If the cow were to run away from the train, the train would go three bridge lengths minus three inches, while the cow goes half a bridge length plus four feet nine inches.
3. If both situations could occur, the totals would be five bridge lengths minus fifteen inches for the train and one bridge length minus three inches for the cow.
4. This means that the train was going exactly five times as fast as the cow. The train was going 90 mph, which means the cow was running 18 mph.
5. Two bridge lengths minus 12 inches, the distance that the train covered, is equal to two and one half bridge lengths minus 25 feet, the distance that the cow would have covered if it ran as fast as the train.
6. 25 feet minus 12 inches is 24 feet, so half a bridge length is 24 feet. The full bridge length is 48 feet.
