Police are trained in the academy to actively pursue any person who attempts to flee as this raises suspicion that a crime has been committed. Delaying pulling over for the police officer will only make matters worse as this too will raise suspicion. The best course of action is to pull over as quickly as possible, but not so quickly that the police officer has to brake to avoid hitting you.

Rolling down your window, turning off your engine and leaving your hands on the steering wheel will make the officer feel that the situation is safe as they approach your car. However, if you reach for your glove box to retrieve your automobile registration before the police officer asks for it could raise suspicion that you are reaching for a weapon such as a gun.

The most dangerous situation for a police officer that has just pulled someone over is when they first approach the car. This is the best opportunity for a suspected criminal to reach for a gun and fire on the officer.

Rummaging through your pockets, reaching into your glove box or under your seat may be visible to the police officer from behind. The officer may think you are reaching for a weapon. However, you can roll down your window as a kind gesture before the officer arrives without raising suspicion that you may be armed.

If you are pulled over by an unmarked car or a police officer in plain clothes, or have any other suspicion that the person pulling you over is not a police officer there are a few actions you can take. You can ask for photo identification, asked them to call their supervisor or even have them escort you to the nearest police station. The officer is trained to understand these situations and will not be irritated. Never attempt to flee as the police officer is trained to pursue someone who flees as criminal activity will be suspected at this point.

If you try to hide something under your car seat, throw something from your vehicle or if there is something illegal clearly visible in your car then criminal activity is suspected and the officer can search your car. Simply having a cup in your cup holder does not constitute something illegal and will not allow the police officer to search your vehicle.

If you get out of your car when asked to stay inside, the police officer will assume that you are attempting to attack them or flee the scene and will pull their gun. Police officers are trained to calm down argumentative people rather than make it worse by using a weapon. Refusing to get out of your car or failing to roll down your window also will not lead to the use of a weapon as it is not directly threatening to the police officer. Of course it is best to do what the officer asks.

If a police officer has reason to believe that you may possess a knife or gun, then they are allowed to pat you down and check for weapons in your possession. Actions that may cause this include reaching under your seat or into your glove box or pockets. Simply having too much to drink, becoming argumentative or wearing certain types of clothing is not enough evidence to allow the officer to pat you down.

Police officers are trained at the academy to decide whether to give you a ticket or a warning before they even leave their car. They may attempt to seem un-decisive about this and get as much information as they can from you, but what you tell them will have very little impact on whether you'll get a ticket or a warning. What you say you could matter in court, however.

The best thing to do when pulled over by the police is to say as little as possible. Do not ignore the officer, but answer their questions with a simple yes or no or other very short answer. Do not tell the officer every detail of what you think you did wrong as this can be used against you in court. Lying to the officer will accomplish nothing and just make things more confusing.
