A lack of folic acid is well known to cause birth defects as it is essential in the neurological development of the fetus. This micronutrient is added as a supplement to breads, cereals, pastas and even orange juice. Folic acid is also known as vitamin B-9 and is required to be added to enriched grain products by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Since folic acid has been added to these foods, birth affects have taken a dramatic decline. Folic acid is also naturally found in leafy vegetables, legumes and fruits.

Recent studies from several well-known medical journals have shown that low carbohydrate diets do very little to burn fat. Low carbohydrate diets cause your body to lose mostly muscle glycogen and water. Less water can lead to dehydration and may make your body burns calories less efficiently. Losing muscle mass is not good for weight loss because the more muscle mass your body has more calories it will burn.

There are two main types of diet pills. The first type is called a diuretic which causes the body to lose water mainly through urination. These pills have similar effects on the body as caffeine and alcohol. Taking diuretics can be dangerous since they can cause dehydration. If your body gets badly dehydrated, toxins can build up and serious health problems can occur. The second type of diet pills are called stimulants. Stimulants cause increased heart rate and loss of appetite. The danger with this is the possibility of sudden heart attack or ischemic stroke. Stimulants are also often addicting.

A low carbohydrate diet will lack a vital nutritional component that the human body requires. This vital component found in carbohydrates are plant-based phyto-chemicals. If the body lacks these important nutrients combined with too much protein and saturated fat in the diet then chronic diseases are more likely to occur. These diseases can include Alzheimer's disease, certain cancers, blindness, osteoporosis, heart disease and kidney stones.

Diet pills are known to cause dehydration, sudden heart attack and ischemic stroke. However, long-term use of diet pills can also cause serious liver and kidney damage. Some diet pills may work well in the short term, but long-term use, especially due to addiction, can be very dangerous and cause serious health problems.

The cells in the brain can metabolize carbohydrates, but are unable to metabolize fat. Other organs, including muscle tissue do have the ability to metabolize both carbohydrates and fat. Because of this, a lack of carbohydrates in the diet will cause the brain to run low on energy. This is caused by a lack of glycogen in the brain. The brain will then start using ketones, which are a byproduct of fat from other parts of the body. However, this is less efficient for the brain and will reduce mental capacity including memory.

Diuretic pills cause the body to lose water mainly through increased urination. These pills are taken to allow the dieter to lose weight very quickly. However, the weight that is being lost is water and not body fat. This lost water weight will not stay off and will only complicate matters as the dieter will become dehydrated. Serious dehydration can cause toxins to build up in the body which can then cause serious health problems.

There is a good reason why we all crave sweets such as candy and cookies. This is because starchy and sweet foods cause the production of serotonin which helps regulate moods and emotions. If your body lacks serotonin, then moods can become unstable and tempers short. Since women are more emotional than men they are more affected by this. On the contrary, eating proteins such as steak can actually reduce the production of serotonin.

A protein sparing modified fast is a very specific diet designed to remove body fat quickly. This type of diet involves consuming just enough protein to prevent muscle loss. This may sound like the ultimate solution to losing body fat while keeping muscle mass and water content intact. However, this type of diet is well-known to cause dangerous hormonal changes and rapid metabolic slowdown. If your metabolism slows down too much then your body will attempt to store as much fat as it can. This diet only has temporary benefits and is mainly used by bodybuilders before a competition.

Weight-loss surgery is performed mainly on severely obese patients. The surgery involves rerouting a section of the stomach making the patient feel full sooner. This type of surgery has worked very well with the severely obese. However, this type of procedure does not come without its dangers. Due to the fact that the patient feels full sooner, induced bulimia can occur. The surgery can sometimes cause a hernia which will require another trip to the hospital. Gallstones can also occur due to the change in diet.
