When you think of games consoles you probably imagine teenagers playing sports, racing and shooting games in their strongholds...sorry I mean bedrooms. However the release of the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS has changed this image, gaming is no longer a case of lounging around button bashing, this new generation of console can be found in front rooms across the country, with the whole family wanted to play.
The Nintendo Wii offers a completely different experience to other consoles on the market; it is a new form of family entertainment. There are of course Wii Games that cater for the regular gamers market such as Resident Evil and Fifa, the later of which has recently developed a Wii compatible version. But the much more exciting development is the fact that the Wii and its handheld alternative are capable of producing games that cater for our mind and body. Meaning that you can enjoy yourself, whilst improving your cognitive ability or getting fit!
Nintendo has included Wii Sports in the console package and it gets the best out of the motion-sensor console and with the ability to play with up to four players on the mini games such as tennis and bowling, it means that the whole family can be involved and active. The recent release of Wii Fit uses a variety of mini games, stretches and activities to improve balance, posture and fitness; this is something completely original and shows the direction in which gaming is heading.
This new type of game is also evident in Nintendo’s handheld console, with Nintendo DS games such as ‘Brain Age’ and ‘Big Brain Academy.’ These games aim to sharpen your mind and keep your brain healthy. As long as Nintendo can keep producing games like these as well as games such as Wii Sports and Wii Play they will dominate this lucrative market.
Gaming is no longer for the Playstation generation; it is a complete mind and body workout that appeals to everyone.
